This article will teach you everything you need to know about choosing the best jiu-jitsu gi size for your body type to fit correctly and comfortably.

What Do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi Sizes Mean?

Gi sizing in Brazilian jiu-jitsu refers to the length and width of the gi jacket and pants. If you’re unfamiliar with it, a gi is the jacket and pants a BJJ practitioner wears while training.

Otherwise, those gi sizes are calculated by the notable jiu-jitsu gi brands to suit the different practitioners’ body types based on their height and weight.

Otherwise, to make it easier to choose a new gi, different brands categorize those sizes on a table called the “gi size chart,” which differs for men, women, and children.

How do I Choose the Jiu Jitsu Gi Size?

You should measure and weigh yourself to find the best gi for you. Then, once you’ve determined your weight and height, consult the gi size chart to determine your size.

A2 will suit you well if you are a man with an average body weight of 140 lbs (63,5kg) and a height of 5’6″ (1,7 meters).

However, F2 will suit you well if you are a woman with an average body weight of 115 lbs (52kg) and a height of 5’3″ (1,6 meters).

Otherwise, M2 will suit well a BJJ kid with an average body weight of 80lbs (36kg) and a height of 4’75” (1,45 meters).

But what if you’re falling between two sizes in the gi chart? In that case, you can size up and try to shrink the jiu-jitsu kimono to make it more comfortable and fit well.

How Should a Jiu-Jitsu Gi Fit?

When looking for a new gi, one of the first things you can do is see how well it fits. You should wear a gi that is not baggy and complements your style.

The gi jacket should be comfortable, allowing your elbows and shoulders to move freely, and the sleeves should not extend past the wrist or be too short.

Aside from that, the gi pants should be loose enough to allow for a good range of motion while still correctly fitting.

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) requires your competition to be comfortable. Therefore, the gi’s sleeve should fall precisely near the wrist, and the gi’s pants should fall around the ankle joint. Otherwise, there must be at least 7 cm between your flesh and the fabric.
