The Surprising Lesson I Learned from Slowing Down
Would you believe that Jiu-Jitsu would teach you patience and passion like no other martial art? And this could change your life more than just your grappling skills.
A few years ago, I made my first roll with a black belt. It was amazing.
The Black Belt’s Secret: Slow Is Smooth, Smooth Is Fast
I felt like I was going to drown during the roll. I tried hard to get out of bad positions or make them submit, but they were always ten steps ahead of me. Even though they moved slowly and calmly, it was incredibly effective.
I asked, “How are you so fast?” immediately following the roll.
They knew it was them and smiled, “I am not fast.” I’m smooth. And when you’re smooth, you’re quick. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.”
At first, I didn’t get it. For me, speed meant exerting all of my force. But as I continued practicing, I observed something strange.
My hasty movements resulted in sloppy blunders, including missed grips, poor placement, and lost energy. Higher belts, on the other hand, moved with purposeful intent, making every stride count.
The Turning Point: Learning to Slow Down
I decided to adjust my strategy. Instead of speeding through techniques, I concentrated on the finer points—my grip angle, hip positioning, and transition timing. It felt strange at first.
Slowing down during difficult rolls appeared paradoxical. However, with time, my movements grew smoother, more efficient, and unexpectedly effective.
The principle “slow is smooth, smooth is fast” is more than just a mat lesson. It applies to all aspects of life.
Applying Patience and Precision Beyond the Mats
In the past, I rushed through things, believing that speed was the key to success. But I frequently missed important subtleties or burned out soon. After embracing the mindset I gained on the mats, I began to slow down in my daily life.
At work, I focused on completing one task at a time rather than multitasking. I became more thoughtful in my conversations, listening carefully before responding. What was the result? Higher-quality work, more meaningful connections, and a greater sense of serenity.
The Path to Mastery
When I sense the need to haste, I recall those black belt remarks. True speed is not achieved through frenzied movement but rather through accuracy, patience, and belief in the process.
Mastery, both in Jiu-Jitsu and in life, is the result of gradually refining your art. When sluggish becomes smooth and smooth becomes quick, transformation occurs.
