The New Wave Jiu Jitsu was created in 2021 by John Danaher, Gordon Ryan, and Garry Tonon after the breakup of the Danaher Death Squad

The split of the DDS resulted in the formation of two new BJJ teams, New Wave Jiu Jitsu and B Team Jiu Jitsu (led by Nicky Ryan, Craig Jones, Ethan Crelinsten, and Nick Rodriguez).

In 2021, the BJJ community was waiting for the DDS to relocate from Puerto Rico to Austin, Texas. But bad news had prevented that since Craig Jones, Nick Rodriguez, and other grapplers decided to leave the DDS.

New Wave Jiu Jitsu Members

Among the luminaries of New Wave Jiu-Jitsu are some of the most influential sports figures. John Danaher, the architect of the gym’s philosophy, is a maestro of technique and strategy.

In addition to Gordon Ryan, a name synonymous with excellence in grappling, continues to redefine the sport’s limits. Garry Tonon, a versatile fighter who excels in BJJ and MMA, brings a dynamic edge to the team.

John Danaher (Head Instructor)

John Danaher

John Danaher is regarded as one of the best coaches in BJJ grappling. The 6th-degree black belt under Renzo Gracie has coached several grapplers to triumph, including Gordon Ryan, Nicky Ryan, Garry Tonon, etc.

All statistics show that John Danaher will continue to serve as the primary coach of the New Wave gym.

Gordon Ryan

Gordon Ryan the King of ADCC BJJ Grappling Championships

Gordon Ryan is a famous grappler who has won the ADCC World Championship and other no-gi BJJ tournaments. He is a five-time ADCC World Champion, a two-time IBJJF World No-Gi Champion, an IBJJF Pans No-Gi Champion, and many more titles.

These accomplishments would not be possible without the guidance of John Danaher, Tom DeBlass, and other professors. Their loyalty, unwavering support, and advice have profoundly influenced Gordon Ryan’s life.

Then, the Garry Tonon’s black belt later changed the grappling submission field due to his accomplishments and influence.

Nowadays, Gordon has a considerable responsibility at the New Wave Gym to spread the grappling martial arts by assisting grapplers of all levels to reach their aims.

Garry Tonon

Garry Tonon is a legendary grappler and a founding member of the original DDS. He holds a BJJ black belt from Ricardo Almeida and Tom DeBlass.

The heel hook expert has been grappling for years and has achieved many wonderful things, like winning the IBJJF Pan Championship NoGi (2015) and the EBI WW Invitational (2014/2015).

Garry Tonon, on the other hand, has moved his focus to MMA, where he trains and represents Evolve MMA Team.

As a result, he signed a contract with the ONE FC organization in 2018. His current MMA record is 6-1, with most of his victories coming by submission due to his BJJ submission grappling experience.

Giancarlo Bodoni

Giancarlo Bodoni

Giancarlo Bodoni is another great grappler who joined the New Wave Jiu-Jitsu Team. He was born in Miami, Florida, and got his black belt under Lucas Lepri. Otherwise, before 2021, Bodoni was training and coaching at the Faria Academy in Boston.

But Giancarlo relocated to Austin, Texas, in 2021 and began practicing Brazilia jiu-jitsu at the New Wave Gym.

Then, it didn’t take long for him to shine in competitions, as he later won the North American ADCC Trials and the ADCC World Championship by defeating Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa in the -88kg weight class final. Indeed, Giancarlo is the 2021 IBJJF Pan No-Gi Champion.
