“I thought being out of shape was just who I was, but Jiu-Jitsu helped me change that.”
Hey, I’m Lisa, and here’s how Jiu-Jitsu turned my life around.
For most of my adult life, I was never really into fitness.
I worked a desk job, spent my evenings watching TV, and slowly, over the years, I became more and more sedentary.
My energy was low, I was gaining weight, and even the thought of working out felt exhausting.
“When you’re stuck in a routine, it’s easy to forget what being active feels like.”
I’d tried going to the gym here and there, but it never stuck.
I’d walk in, wander around the machines, feel completely out of place, and leave after 20 minutes.
Nothing about it motivated me, so I’d always fall back into my old habits.
“The hardest part of change is finding something that clicks for you.”
I knew I needed to get moving, but I couldn’t find a reason to keep showing up.
One day, a coworker of mine mentioned she had started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wouldn’t stop talking about how much she loved it.
She said it wasn’t just a workout, but a challenge, both mentally and physically.
The idea of learning something new and doing something completely out of my comfort zone intrigued me.
So, I decided to give it a try.
My first class was nerve-wracking.
Everyone seemed to know exactly what they were doing, and there I was, feeling completely uncoordinated.
But the environment was different than anything I’d experienced before.
People were encouraging, and it didn’t matter that I was a total beginner—they were there to help me learn.
“Sometimes, all it takes is the right environment to change your mindset.”
What surprised me the most was how quickly I started to enjoy it.
Sure, I was tired and sore after each class, but it was a good kind of tired—the kind that makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something.
Slowly, I started noticing changes. I wasn’t just getting more active; I was building confidence in myself.
“Progress doesn’t happen overnight, but every time you show up, you’re moving in the right direction.”
Now, almost three years later, Jiu-Jitsu has become a big part of my life.
I train multiple times a week, and I’ve gone from someone who hated the idea of working out to someone who looks forward to every class.
I’ve lost weight, gained strength, and feel more energized than I have in years.
“It’s not about how you start—it’s about how you keep going.”
Jiu-Jitsu didn’t just get me off the couch—it changed my entire mindset about what I’m capable of.
If you’re feeling stuck or out of shape like I was, I encourage you to try something new.
You never know what might end up being the thing that gets you moving again.
“The first step is the hardest, but it’s also the most important.”
